ACE has a national reputation for providing exceptional training and support to enable crews and individual placement members to safely implement and complete complex conservation projects for the US Forest Service, BLM, National Park Service, USFWS and numerous state and local land management partners.

Job Title: Controller

Location: Salt Lake City, UT

Department/Division: Administration

Status: Regular Full-Time, Salaried (Exempt)

Schedule/Hours: Full-time (Monday-Friday). 40 hours/week with additional hours as needed.

Reports To: Chief Administrative Officer

Compensation: Competitive annualized starting salary of $65,000 to $80,000, based on experience. This full-time position is eligible for a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, vision and supplemental insurance, paid vacation, sick leave, designated holidays, and 401k retirement for qualified employees

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities. The Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the board, and is the main point of contact for audits, and will work closely with the senior admin leadership team.

The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations of a budget of $25+ million. The Controller will ensure that ACE has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and conduct flawless audits. The Controller will work closely with program leaders and their staff, not only to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.

In addition, the Controller will partner with the CAO, senior leadership, human resources (HR) and information technology (IT) staff to enhance and better integrate finance, HR, and IT functions.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Coordinate all audit activity.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of ACE's financial status.
  • Assist ACE's leadership and program leaders in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Support the CAO in engaging the board around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery.
  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program leads and directors; continuously collaborate with program leads and directors to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines.
  • Manage insurance and financial risk assessment relationships, and work with strategic partnerships to ensure proper coverage for general / special liability, construction, and workers compensation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • Able to leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to ACE's mission; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the CAO, the responsibility for finance.
  • Minimum of a BA or relevant experience; CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments
  • A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential
  • Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software (NetSuite preferred)
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus. simple reporting
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board or other outside partners
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
  • Computer competency; Proficient with Microsoft software, including Excel. Familiarity with Google Docs, Google Drive, and Google Sheets a plus.
  • Must be flexible and eager to engage the highly mobile and largely remote teams that make up ACE.
  • Effective time management skills, and the ability/desire to concurrently perform multiple deadline-driven tasks.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity, understanding and the ability to effectively interact with individuals (internal and external) from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, disability and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Valid driver's license and an insurable driving record
  • Proficient in English
  • Ability to pass a federal criminal background check

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talks and hears. Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch (all physical demands are required with or without reasonable accommodations).
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently lifts up to 10 lbs., occasionally lifts up to 25 pounds.
  • Environmental: Mainly indoor, office environment conditions; indoor air quality is good and temperature is controlled.
  • Noise Environment: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.
  • Travel: This position may require domestic travel as needed.
