ACE has a national reputation for providing exceptional training and support to enable crews to safely and economically implement technically complex and physically demanding conservation projects for the US Forest Service, BLM, National Park Service, USFWS and numerous state and local land management partners. ACE's Pacific West leadership team is seeking one (1) Restoration Crew Leader to work under the direction of the Project Manager to assist in leading teams of young adult Corpsmembers in the completion of environmental conservation and restoration projects throughout the Sierra Nevada and Southern Cascades.

American Conservation Experience (ACE) is seeking a Restoration Crew Leader to work in the Sierra Nevada Region of California with extensive background working with conservation corps in the field. Job duties include, and are not limited to, restoration projects based in the Sierra Nevada region that integrate a pest management plan to control invasive plant species. This will involve chemical and mechanical removal as well as fuel reduction through chainsaw use. Qualified candidates must have the ability to handle concurrent operations in a fast paced environment, the determination to encourage and enforce compliance with all elements of ACE's safety policies, and the skills to train and develop ACE's corps members. Possessing or the ability to obtain a California Qualified Applicator License is a requirement of this position. ACE will help qualified individuals to achieve this license.
The Restoration Crew Lead will focus on ACE California restoration specific crews. The 2019 summer season is specifically requiring a highly skilled and motivated individual to lead our Restoration Projects in the Sierra Nevada. This position will be field based and will require the applicant to work extensively with multiple ACE staff, corps members, and partner agency staff in various environments including front-country and wilderness areas throughout California. This individual will lead challenging projects in remote and beautiful locations in California.
Key Accountabilities:
- Lead, manage, and hold Corps Crew members accountable while serving on conservation projects.
- Collect, record, and submit accurate, detailed project data.
- Serve as a restoration Crew Lead when Herbicide/Pesticide or restoration-based projects are contracted.
- MUST HAVE the ability to test for the California Qualified Applicators License. Study materials and testing fees will be provided.
- Ensure personal and crew member's safety while in the field
- Responsible for producing high quality work and guarantee successful project outcomes.
Typical Duties:
- Leading and training a team for restoration based projects. Project specifications may include: Fuels reduction involving extensive chainsaw use; logouts; invasive plant removal using mechanical and chemical treatment; mapping and monitoring using GPS technology; Arranging details of transportation, tools, equipment, living arrangements, field communication, and work project completion.
- Complete all project paperwork correctly, including weekly reports, safety sheets, accident reports, end of week check lists, feedback forms and others as necessary.
- Transport crew to worksites and camp with crew during projects.
- Hike, backpack, camp and cook outdoors while at front country and wilderness spike camps.
- Arrange details of transportation, tools, equipment, living arrangements, field communication, and work project completion.
- Maintain and repair hand and power tools and other equipment as necessary.
- Replace items as needed in the cookset, first aid kit, and PPE set.
- Arrange environmental education activities and opportunities.
Requirements
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to lead, train, supervise a team.
- Ability to lead and train a team in the safe and successful execution of a variety of restoration projects.
- Knowledge of environmental conservation skills, basic environmental education, and outdoor living/camping skills.
- Considerable knowledge of invasive plant mitigation techniques and land management practices previous experience in both chemical and mechanical removal of invasive species is desirable
- 1+ year of chainsaw experience
- Must have considerable knowledge of chainsaw operation and maintenance, feller experience, and overseeing chainsaw operations in large scale fuels reductions as well as other scenarios.
- Holds B Faller/FAL2 qualification or has the knowledge, skills and abilities to receive B Faller qualification upon hire.
- Previous experience on hazardous fuels reduction projects, preferred
- Experience and knowledgeable in troubleshooting basic mechanical issues with chainsaws in the field
- Working knowledge of young adult development, team-building and motivational techniques. Experience serving as a positive role model and mentor for team members.
- Ability to perform a wide variety of heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, and often under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.
- Ability to adapt to surrounding work environment and conditions that can change frequently.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with corps members, partner agency staff, and the general public.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to understand and follow ACE systems and processes including supervisor key responsibilities.
Other Requirements:
- If the candidate is currently an AmeriCorps Member, the candidate must successfully complete their AmeriCorps term before April 22, 2019
- Must maintain a positive, constructive work environment conducive to team dynamics
- Must maintain timely, effective communication with project partners, supervisors, and crew members
- Must enforce the use of appropriate safety procedures in all tasks
- Must have an exemplary safety record
- Must maintain optimal physical health, including a drug-free lifestyle
- Must possess a valid driver's license
- Must secure First aid/CPR certification within 14 days of employment and maintain certification
- Must submit to a criminal background check prior to hire. Persons convicted of a felony are not eligible for appointment to this classification. This position is a covered position that may entail recurring access to vulnerable populations such as youth and the elderly. Selection for the position is contingent upon a review of all criminal history results.

Compensation: Full-time, starting at $16 -$18/hour + housing option available. Benefit eligible.
Hours: 40 hours/week within a flexible schedule.
