Flagstaff, AZ: (Headquarters) Various locations throughout the Southwest including but not limited to: Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas.
Job Title:
Assistant Crew Supervisor
As a member of an American Conservation Corps crew, assistant crew supervisors (ACSV's) assist crew supervisors in the logistics and administration of teams of young adult Corps members performing environmental conservation and restoration projects throughout the Southwest and Western United States. ACSV's provide leadership to Corps members, lead partial teams of corps members, and supervise work crews on a temporary basis in the absence of the crew supervisor. ACSV's also may train corps members in conservation work skills and outdoor living skills. Work projects are almost exclusively outdoors, involve strenuous physical labor in all weather conditions and climates, and may involve "spike" camping for several days at a time in remote wilderness locations. The work may involve working for other ACE offices/locations for temporary periods.

Required Duties and Responsibilities:
Typical Duties:
Leading partial crews or temporarily supervising a work crew performing conservation work projects, including:
- Restoring forest health and reducing wildfire risk through tree thinning using powered equipment; constructing and maintaining trails; constructing and maintaining fences and outdoor facilities; restoring wildlife habitats; maintaining public parks, campgrounds, and recreation areas; planting trees, conducting native plant revegetation, and eradicating exotic plant species; conducting ecological testing and monitoring; surveying, mapping and monitoring using GPS technology
- Assisting the crew supervisor in logistical details of transportation, tools, equipment, living arrangements, field communication, and work project completion
- Assisting the crew supervisor in transporting crew to worksites, and camping with crew during projects
- Maintaining and repairing hand and power tools and other equipment as necessary
- Hiking, backpacking, camping and cooking outdoors while at front country and wilderness spike camps
- Assisting in completion of project paperwork when necessary, weekly reports, safety sheets, accident reports, end of week check lists, feedback forms and others as necessary
- Replacing items as needed in the cook set, first aid kit, and PPE set.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Assistant crew supervisors must have the following:
- Ability to lead and train a team
- Knowledge of environmental conservation skills, basic environmental education and outdoor living/camping skills
- Ability to perform a wide variety of heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, and often under adverse weather conditions and in various climates
- Ability to adapt to surrounding work environment and conditions that can change frequently
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with corps members, crew supervisor, partner agency staff, and the general public
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Ability to understand and follow ACE systems and processes including supervisor key responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Possess a valid driver's license, a clean driving record and willingness to submit to background checks
- Drug users, including recreational smokers of marijuana, should not consider applying as ACE reserves the right to require drug testing at any time and requires the maintenance of a drug free program at all times
- Must secure first aid/CPR certification within 14 days of employment and maintain certification
- Must maintain optimal physical health
- Must submit to a criminal background check prior to hire. Persons convicted of a felony are not eligible for appointment to this classification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience with a Youth Conservation Corps or other youth organization conducting conservation work in an outdoor environment
- Working knowledge of both restoration and trail conservation techniques
- Prior leadership experience.
Education Requirements:
A BA/BS degree (or higher) is preferred.
Compensation:
Full-Time, $11.00 hr., Benefit Eligible
