Job Title: Trails Support Specialist

Location: Flagstaff, Arizona

Department/Division: CREW, ACE Solutions

Status: Regular Full-Time, Salaried (Exempt)

Schedule/Hours: Flexible schedule (Monday-Friday); 40 hours/week with additional hours as needed.

Reports To: National Trails Specialist

Travel: Significant travel to project sites.

Start Date: May - June 2021

Compensation: Full-Time, 40 hours/week within a flexible schedule.

Pay dependent on experience.

The ACE Trails Support Specialist is responsible for coordinating and implementing mechanized trail projects nationally for all ACE program divisions alongside ACE Project Managers, Division Directors and partner staff. As a lead technical representative for specific mechanized field projects, the Trails Support Specialist plays a crucial role in project preparation, implementation and management, guiding projects through their lifecycle as well as ensuring quality control, safety compliance and equipment maintenance. As a part of the ACE Solutions team, the Trails Support Specialist will be responsible for project communication, coordination and logistical organization for mechanized projects throughout ACE as well as supporting ongoing ACE Solutions program development.

As a combined field and office based position, the Trails Support Specialist will be required to allocate approximately 40% of time supporting project operations in the field and approximately 60% if time in the office preparing logistics, coordinating resources, managing various machine team administration to ensure the success of mechanized projects and ACE Solutions initiatives. In collaboration with Machine Operations, Project managers and Directors, the Trails Support Specialist plays an important role in advancing ACE's core values as well as values such as safety, professionalism, flexibility, quality, enthusiasm, dedication and passion.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an ACE technical lead and project-related point of contact for ACE divisional staff and project partners for mechanized projects
  • Maintain and foster existing, strong relationships with Machine Operators, Project Managers, Division Directors, project partners.
  • Coordinate with, and support ACE division operations staff to plan, implement and complete mechanized projects
  • Perform field visits and provide support on projects to ensure safety and quality control while holding ACE field staff and corps members accountable to ACE's high standards.
  • Perform Machine Team administrative duties, including; develop and keep up to date the machine team schedule, review and submit timesheets to divisions, assist division directors with invoicing
  • Ensure safety is provided for all projects, coordinate with divisions accordingly and perform on the ground support as necessary
  • Teach, train, mentor divisional project managers, crew leaders and crews while in field as subject matter expert, and perform formal skills trainings to divisions
  • Support operators in the field as needed, may include: acting as ground person, hauling equipment with truck and trailer, staging fuel/supplies on site, assisting crews with technical projects, quality control project work and operate equipment as needed
  • Assures compliance with project tracking records, including weekly reports, accomplishment reports, incident reports, safety sheets, end of project checklists, OSHA injury reports,
  • Maintain fleet vehicles and equipment, update maintenance logs and ensure maintenance schedules are adhered to. Perform equipment maintenance as needed
  • Manage shop space as it relates to the machine team
  • Purchase, inventory, track and keep in stock common machine parts for field work
  • Travel on assignment throughout US territories to conduct and supervise mechanized project work as required.

  • Actively assist in the strategic development of existing Division programs and projects as related to trails and mechanized initiatives.
  • Adheres to ACE safety policies and procedures. Reports any unsafe or harmful conditions, incidents and/or accidents immediately.
  • Fosters a culture and environment that positions ACE for success and ensures that ACE is the program of choice for partners, members and staff.
  • Perform other duties and related functions as needed or assigned by the National ACE Solutions Technical Specialist

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assist ACE Solutions with trail related projects, including trail design and external trainings
  • Assist ACE Solutions and divisions with project development, including trail design, cost estimating and technical narratives for funding opportunities
  • Duties as assigned

Required Experience and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of professional experience working in and/or managing conservation, restoration, or trail projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out remote field work independently as well as in a supervisory role.
  • Technical understanding of conservation, ecology and familiarity with common land management restoration practices.
  • Proven record of successfully communicating directly with resource professionals, public and private stakeholders, members, staff consultants, contractors and federal agency staff.
  • Demonstrated capacity to operate in ever-changing environments and organizational structures, and adapt to evolving needs of a client.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, outdoors, in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to effectively lift 50 lbs. and hike over rough terrain.
  • Proven project management skills: ability to observe, report and track on-the-ground project work and progress.
  • Ability to prevent, analyze and resolve safety issues; possess knowledge of safety procedures as applied to field operations.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in conservation/environmental operations.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, rules, and policies governing field operations in environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Experience leading, training and motivating young adults in a safe, organized and professional manner.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills necessary to organize young adult crews, ensuring a positive culture and a high-quality, efficient service.
  • Physically fit and able to perform a wide variety of heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, often under adverse weather conditions.
  • Working knowledge of young adult development, team-building and motivational techniques.
  • Maintains professional communications and relations with agency project partners, ACE staff, Crew Members, and the general public.
  • Must have the ability to travel frequently.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety procedures applied to field operations.
  • Ability to lead and train individuals and teams.
  • Ability to coordinate the activities of culturally and economically diverse employees to ensure quality and efficiency.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to understand and follow ACE systems and processes.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Wilderness First Aid (WFR preferred) certification within 3 months of employment.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a CPR and BBP certification within 14 days of employment
  • Must possess acquire a class B CDL within 6 months of employment

Other Requirements:

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Valid driver's license and an insurable driving record
  • Proficient in English
  • Ability to pass a federal criminal background check

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking/hiking, carrying, having full function of arms and legs. There is frequent travel to field sites via four wheel drive vehicles, fixed wing aircraft, and/or boats. There is a potential for adverse climatic conditions. Field work involves walking/hiking long distances and bending and climbing on steep and rough terrain with heavy loads. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated safety officer. Manual dexterity is required for use of computer keyboard/mouse and other routine office equipment. May occasionally be required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently lifts up to 25 lbs., ability to lift up to 60 pounds
  • Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates
  • Noise Environment: Moderate to high noise such gas-powered chainsaws, other power tools, mechanized field equipment
  • Travel: This position requires significant domestic travel.
