Finance Manager/Controller

Location:  Flagstaff, AZ

American Conservation Experience (ACE) is seeking a Finance Manager/Controller with extensive background in bookkeeping, substantial knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, the ability to handle concurrent operations in a fast-paced environment, and the determination to encourage and enforce compliance with all elements of external and internal fiscal policy.     

ACE is a rapidly growing, dynamic, multi-state non-profit organization with the reputation for providing professionally supervised crews and career-minded interns to undertake critical natural resource management projects for federal, state, and local agencies.   ACE is headquartered in Flagstaff, AZ and currently conducts field activities in 46 states and 3 territories.   With a 14 million dollar annual budget and approximately 75 staff supporting up to 750 full time volunteers and interns, strong financial leadership is a key to ACE's continued success.  

The ideal candidate will have previously managed the finance department of a non-profit or public/private partnership and will possess a broad spectrum of leadership skills gained from extensive experience with other dynamic organizations.   The position requires strength of personality, as the Finance Director must unflinchingly yet supportively enforce fiscal policies and programmatic procedures within ACE's management team while serving as the organizational point of contact for our contracted auditors, CPA, and payroll company.  

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee 4- person Finance Department and development of additional staff.
  • Oversee bookkeeping activities, including timely creation and distribution of profit loss statements, accrual reports, cash flow statements, accounts receivables, etc.
  • Prepare for ACE's annual A-133 audit and serve as the primary point of contact with the audit team.  
  • Inform ACE's senior management team about all aspects of fiscal compliance and take full accountability to ensure that all financial activities undertaken in ACE align completely with GAAP, with all aspects of ACE's internal fiscal policy, and with all federal and state laws governing non-profit organizations.
  • Prepare financial progress reports for federal and state grants, including AmeriCorps.
  • Manage ACE's banking services, loans, and real estate transactions
  • Produce accurate cash flow reports and determine the timing of capitol purchases to support the expansion of ACE's mission-driven services.

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience managing federal grants and coordinating non-profit finances OR 7 years in a financial leadership role in any sector.
  • BA degree required.  Preference for applicants with CPA, MBA, or advanced degree in a related field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles derived from professional experience.
  • Extensive experience working with financial management software, preferably QuickBooks.
  •   Strong leadership, management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate tactfully and professionally verbally and in writing.
  • Commitment to ACE's mission and to public service through youth development and volunteerism.

Start Date:  Immediate opening.  Open until filled

Length of Term:  We are seeking a dedicated, career-oriented candidate to help ACE achieve greater impact on a national scale.

Compensation:   $60,000 - $75,000 depending on experience.    Benefit package to start after 3 months, including health insurance, dental insurance, vacation and sick leave accrual.
